The 6th annual Lux Lights Festival kicked off last night in Wellington, showcasing light installations along the Wellington Harbour.

The free show began to encourage people to feel safe using public spaces at night, and this year's show features 17 installations inspired by nature.

This year's theme is the environment. Jamie Boynton is one of the Māori artists showcasing at the event with his installation, Whareatua.

Event organiser Robert Appierdo says their goal is to encourage Wellingtonians to explore their city.

The Wellington Lux Light show is on at Frank Kitts Park, complete with a few food trucks.

Come 27 May, its lights out for another year.
