Women in sports were recognised yesterday in the Queen's Birthday Honours List. 

One of them is Kiwi Ferns and Counties Manukau captain Laura Mariu who became a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit. 

Mariu has played in every women's rugby league world cup and says her motivation is to grow the game and talent in preparation for the new women's NRL competition. 

She celebrated yesterday by playing league for her Counties Manukau side against Auckland in the women's national competition. 

She has played for the Kiwi Ferns for 18 years now and also captained the side at the world cup last year. 

Mariu just graduated as a police officer, she also coaches league in her community. 

She's not the only woman captain who was honoured, the captain of the Black Ferns, Fiao'o Fa'amausili, was made an Officer of New Zealand for her services to rugby.
