The community of Kaiaua is busy putting their homes back together after last week’s storm, but while the damage was pretty severe, residents are thankful that no one was hurt.

On Friday, a storm saw the sea of Tikapa Moana invade the homes of people like Lorna Ratahi who says, “We were in the dining room and saw the waves just getting bigger, and bigger. Before we knew it, it was smashing up against the house, against all the sheds.”

Ratahi also says unity has been the community's saving grace, but there's also been a lot of support from the council, “The council and civil defence knocked on all the doors to warn us of what was coming, but we didn't expect what we got.”

Civil Defence Minister Kris Faafoi is set to visit the area tomorrow, but there's still a lot of work to be done and Ratahi is thankful that her friends and family are safe and that no one was hurt.

A community meeting is set for tomorrow night to inform the community of what'll come next for Kaiaua.
