A book co-authored by two pre-eminent Māori language experts is set to be launched today at Mātaatua Marae in Rotorua.

The book, He Kupu Tuku Iho by Sir Tīmoti Kāretu and Dr Wharehuia Milroy, canvasses key cultural concepts as well as contemporary language issues, and what’s more, it’s written entirely in te reo Māori.

According to Dr Milroy, the language was at the forefront of this book.

“Ko te reo Māori te mātāmua o ngā whakaaro kua whakatakotoria e māua, hāunga te kiko o ngā kupu.”

Sir Tīmoti says the book is based on conversations the pair have had with each other and their take on the world from a Māori perspective.

“He whānui te titiro i te āhuatanga o ngā pātai i whiua ki a māua. He whakahoki pātai kē te nuinga o ngā kōrero o roto.”

It is the first book by Auckland University Press to be published entirely in Māori and you can purchase a copy from their website
