Government set to look at procurement practices in construction
The Government says it'll work to clean up its act on its own building contracts after a raft of complaints from the construction industry. The construction sector says departments aren't following their own guidelines, contributing to the problems the industry's facing.
18% of construction contracts are government contracts.
Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford says the government has a role to play in ensuring government agencies aren’t disadvantaging businesses in the construction industry.
“We recognise government, even though govt contracts are a minority of the work that this part of the construction industry does, government has a responsibility to lead here so we're willing to take a hard look at the government's approach to procurement.”
The issue was tabled to be discussed further by ministers at cabinet yesterday.
