Hundreds of mourners attended the funeral of the former Deputy Prime Minister Jim Anderton in Christchurch today.

A church service was held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church where the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel were among the mourners.

Political commentator Ella Henry said that Mr Anderston was a champion for uplifting people out of poverty which helped a lot of struggling Māori trying to find work, “He could see historically it was about poverty, not race, and that's what I think was part of his contribution to Māori people and development.”

He's been praised for helping to set up Kiwibank, the superannuation fund and paid parental leave.

Mr Anderton will be buried on Waiheke Island in a few days’ time.
