A drowning at Waimarama Beach in the Hawke’s Bay on Sunday has brought the holiday drowning toll to six as of yesterday.

The drowning happened after a group of people were swimming in front of the surf club on Sunday night.

A male and a female who were part of the group started to be swept out to sea with nearby residents who saw the group in difficulty raised the alarm with the Waimarama Surf Club volunteers responded along with the local fire crew.

While the female swimmer was able to be saved, the male swimmer couldn't be revived after CPR.

For some club members, it was the second drowning they had attended in the past week.
