Another Māori will enter parliament today.

That person is Dan Bidois from Ngāti Maniapoto, winner of the by-election in Northcote this past weekend.

Bidois has retained the seat for Northcote for National and says he will fight for Northcote.

"The people of Northcote have spoken and they have said loud and clear that they want a fighter for Northcote."

He won the by-election in Northcote over his Labour rival Shanan Halbert by 1362 votes. He says he's not taking his win for granted.

"It's not a safe National seat, it's where you've got to work hard and the electorate rewards you if you work hard and you'll be their voice, so I'm going to be out there being visible."

It is a victory of sorts for his Labour rival Halbert who says he's ready for the general election in 2020.

"I'm a hard worker and when you get this far along the political journey I'm up for it and I'm absolutely up for representing this community."
