The Prime Minister has announced that Cook Islanders will be able to get their full New Zealand pensions from next year.

Jacinda Ardern made the announcement in Rarotonga this morning as part of her week-long tour of the Pacific.

It's been a long time irritant to Cook Islanders that to be eligible for their full pension back home they have to live in New Zealand for five years over the age of 50.

"We are here today to offer to the government an additional $7 million specifically for recovery in the wake of Gita."

The Cook Islands is the Prime Ministers last stop in her Pacific mission.
