A Ngāti Porou-Tainui woman has been named in the Commonwealth Games boxing team.

Tasmyn Benny is NZ's top-ranked boxer in her weight class and is currently ranked 7th in the Commonwealth.

Benny is still in her teens and is already establishing an impressive record.

“It's one of my dreams to go to the Commonwealth Games and I can't believe it's actually happening.”

Although she's only 19 years old, Tasmyn Benny has been named in the boxing team for the Commonwealth Games.

She's a navy officer in the day and a boxer by night.

“My dad kind of got me into boxing like he was going and training with his friends so I went along with him one day to get fit for netball and then I just kept going. I just like the competition, how it pushes you.”

While she's only a newcomer to the realm of the Commonwealth Games, gold is still the goal in the Gold Coast.

“I was extremely excited; I didn't expect it to be honest. I was told I was on the long list but I didn't think that I would actually make the team.”

The boxing begins on April 5.
