New Zealand businesses are pledging to tackle plastic waste pollution by agreeing to make their packaging 100% reusable, recyclable and compostable by 2025.

The announcement comes on world environmental day and sees New Zealand Post, Countdown and Foodstuffs among others get on board.

Associate Environment Minister Eugenie Sage says the initiative is a significant step towards stopping plastic pollution.

"World Environment Day's theme is beating plastic pollution. New Zealanders want to do the right thing we can't have whales and turtles die because they've eaten plastic bags, we've got a problem with microplastics in the environment and we will only sort out plastics in the ocean if we deal with plastics on land."

Twelve businesses in total are taking part also on the list are Coca-Cola and L'Oreal.
