The Black Ferns squad for the series against Australia has been named.

The 28-woman squad has 12 players of Māori descent with fullback Selica Winiata has named co-vice-captain.

Black Ferns Coach Glenn Moore says he's pleased with his first squad of the year.

"I'm really excited about the group that we've put together here. You know I think there are some exciting players here."

The team consists of 17 players from the 2017 World Cup winning squad including former captain Fiao'o Fa'amausili and eight new caps.

Ngāti Pūkeko descent and Back Ruahei Demant is one of the newcomers.

But Sevens players Portia Woodman, Sarah Goss and Kelly Brazier have decided to concentrate on the next Olympics in Tokyo.

Moore says him and Sevens Coach Allan Bunting are working together for the betterment of the women sport.

"I think the important thing is we both have the same goal and that's about growing the game and growing the player base and skill level and making sure we manage these players really."

The Black Ferns will get their first opportunity for a hit-out in a warm-up game against the Bay of Plenty Volcanix and Auckland Storm on 11 August in Tauranga.
