The Black Ferns have named their first squad of professionally contracted players.

New Zealand Rugby says it's a historic moment for the sport in NZ and reflects the growing interest in women's rugby both home and abroad.

Despite announcing her retirement last year the world cup winning captain Fiao'o Faamausili will lace up her experienced boots for the side.

Under the one-year contract, players receive a retainer plus a top up if they are named in the playing side for upcoming test matches.

Noticeably there are a few famous names not on the list today, playing currently in the sevens side but the doors are not shut and they will now focus on training to get named in the side to play Australia in August.
