A South Auckland marae has been forced to close after falling victim to theft.

The ablution blocks at Ngā Hau E Whā O Pukekohe Marae were stripped of its plumbing and taps in a bizarre and brazen burglary.

According to marae kuia Tini Astle, the marae has closed its doors after the robbery which has brought issues to their main waterway.

“Ngā wai katoa kua katia tino kino hoki te mahi tapahitanga ngā paipa nē i roto i ngā whare iti waipuke katoa ngā whare tokorua, me pēhea hoki?”

The marae believes that these water taps and pipes were stolen just after midday on Wednesday.

And Astle also believes that a professional has done this job.

“Me ka kite koe i ngā paipa i roto i te whare iti ka kite koe i te torotika o te tapahi, mōhio ana rātou he aha te wāhi e pīrangi ana rātou - kāore ā mātou tamariki e tino koi pērā.”

This issue has taken off on social media but the big question is when the marae will reopen.

“I tēnei wā e noho mamae ana mātou i roto i tō mātou marae. Engari taku mōhio ka hui mātou ko te inihua hoki ka tirongia ērā mea katoa e te poari.”

Once the police have completed their investigation, the marae committee will then meet to discuss their next step forward.
