Many of the people who rely on the Auckland City Mission for food, shelter and support have drug and alcohol problems.

Yesterday, the Prime Minister visited the sanctuary for society's outcasts to announce nearly $17 million in funding for the mission to provide more detox beds.

In 1982, 10 beds were made available on what was meant to be a temporary basis to help people with drug detoxification, and only a few have been added since.

The Prime Minister says the money will be taken from the Criminal Proceeds Act.

Construction will take place over two years to help those struggling come out the other side.
