The All Blacks coach says he's picked a side he can rely on to do the job.

Steve Hansen announced a team brimming with test match experience for the first test against France, one of that numbers is halfback, Aaron Smith.

Hansen says that the Kahungunu tyro is a critical component to the All Blacks game plan.

"His job is to clear the ball as quickly as possible and he's really good at that."

Smith says he practised hard as a kid to get to this level as a starter for the All Blacks.

Hansen also says he knows the strengths of the French side, from the forwards to the backs and defence will be a key part of their game.

"Defensively our game plan won't change we're going to have to get up in their face and knock them over."

The Barrett brothers will add their strength to the match, making All Blacks history where three brothers are named in the starting fifteen together.

It's a big test for the All Blacks and for players like Aaron Smith who will get an opportunity to show why he is the first picked halfback.
