A family is in mourning after an 11-year-old girl died after being struck by a train. The girl was killed by a freight train while reportedly playing on a rail bridge in Ngāruawāhia.

KiwiRail say it was an accident waiting to happen as higher fences and trespass notices have been put in place but continue to be ignored.

Community leaders are calling for people to heed the warnings. Jason Atutolu says that no matter how many fences and other warnings are put in place, kids will always find a way to get through the barriers.

"I basically patrol around this area. If they're going to get into some place, the kids are always going to get into it no matter how many fences, no matter what you do. There's always a danger in every element, in every aspect when you're jumping off bridges. It's not only railway bridges, it's other bridges right around the country.

"It's just saddening that we have tragedies like this that come from it."

The girl's death has been referred to the coroner.
