A documentary on the life, work, and legacy of one of our greatest filmmakers premiered in Auckland last night.

The doco profiles Merata Mita and it was directed by one of her sons.

Mita was a trailblazer in film and a soldier for Māori rights, but to director Hepi Mita, she was just mum.

A mum she may have been, but she was also an actress, director, activist, and strong Māori woman.

Those who knew her best say she inspired many because she showed what we can achieve.

'Merata: How Mum Decolonised the Screen' be making the film festival rounds around the country and abroad.
