Survivor New Zealand Season 2 contestants, Matt and Dave.

Although New Zealand is pretty small, so it’s no surprise that two of our Season 2 castaways already have a history.

The question is, will it play to their advantage?

Contestants Matt and Dave are old mates from their days at Auckland’s Howick College. They played rugby together, and lived at each other’s houses in the weekends.

About three weeks before filming started, they’d caught up at a friend’s birthday, after being out of touch for three years prior.

So bumping into each other in Thailand was a massive surprise for both. When they put the pieces together, and realised they were both going to be on the show, they couldn’t quite believe it.

“I initially thought it was just a random coincidence,” says Matt. “I was already overwhelmed by the situation, processing that Dave was going to be on Survivor as well seemed ridiculous.”

The boys were worried that if the other contestants knew their relationship, it would put a massive target on their backs.

“It’s both a blessing and a curse,” says Dave. “We kind of have a head-start, but it could massively complicate things if we’re torn between in-game alliances and our friendship outside of the game.”

Will they be able to keep it a secret? We’ll have to wait and see!

Survivor New Zealand Season 2 starts Sunday 22 April at 7pm on TVNZ 2.
