  • Get to Know Ruby Lyon

    Ruby plays newcomer Ashley.

Name three similarities between you and your onscreen character.

Ash is pretty much my antonym… but I guess we’re both pretty stubborn and emotional. Just about completely different things.

What has been your best experience/scene on the show to date?

I’ve just happened to waltz on in at the time of the 25th Anniversary, so I’m pretty stoked to be a part of that.

Which other character would you like to be and why?

Damo, for sure. But no one could play him better than Grant.

What are your hobbies/interests outside of SS?

I love musical theatre – watching it, listening to it, being in it, writing it, anything.

What do you do in your down time during the day when you’re not shooting?

Sing and write, and eat way too much peanut butter.

What is your favourite destination in NZ and overseas?

    Overseas – Venice.

NZ - It a shame that I’ve seen so little of my own country, I wouldn’t even know the best NZ destination. The motorway between Auckland and Hamilton is where most of my travelling happens, I could drive it in my sleep.

How many brothers and sisters do you have, are they older or younger?

One brother and one sister, both older and both extremely talented.

What is your date of birth and what star sign are you?

November 3rd, same as Dorothy the Dinosaur. Scorpio.

Who is the actor or actress that you look up to or admire the most?

Tatiana Maslany from Orphan Black. How she can play about 12 different people at once is beyond me. I’d love to spend just one day inside her brain.

What is the thing you enjoy most about going to work every day?

Finding out what craziness Ashley’s getting up to next. It’s a blast to get to see the world through Ashley’s eyes, she’s absolutely fascinating to me.

What has been your favorite scene to film in your time at Shortland Street?

I’ve been pretty lucky with my scenes, but my standouts would be any scenes where Ash and Drew are at each other’s throats. So much fun to whip out some good old baldy insults, and Ben’s always a laugh.

Do you watch Shortland Street at home? If yes, is it strange seeing yourself on television or are you used to it?

The weirdest part is having all my friends and family and random people I haven’t seen in years, telling me they’re watching me.

    What is your favourite food?

    Ice cream, all the way.

What is your favourite television programme and/or film of all time?

Orphan Black has got to be my favourite TV show, though Sherlock, Brooklyn Nine Nine, Arrested Development and 800 Words are definitely up there. I think The Princess Bride might take the trophy for fave film. Or Peter Pan from 2003. Or Finding Nemo. Or – no wait, I should stop.

Are you from Auckland or did you move here to film Shortland Street? Where did you grow up?

Born and bred Hamiltonian, though been living between Auckland and Hamilton for the past 2 years.

Which other actors/actresses do you like working with the most and why?

I love working with Ria (Harper) and Ben (Drew). I’m always learning and laughing when acting with them, and the Ashley part of me loves being with her family.

Can you remember your first day on Shortland Street – what was it like?

I'd had about 2 hours sleep. My new flatmates had decided to have a few people over the night before my first 6.30am call and, being the conflict-avoiding wimp I am, I didn’t say anything until about 3am. So add lack of sleep jitters with nervous jitters… I’m just pleased I got through it. (My flatmates are great, by the way, it was just extremely bad timing.)
