Rugby World Cup 2019™

Rugby World Cup 2019 is coming to TVNZ from 20 September this year.

Defending world champions New Zealand are among 20 nations vying for rugby’s top prize, The Webb Ellis Cup – with the tournament taking place over the course of seven weeks in 12 cities across Japan.

Together with Spark Sport, we’re excited to open up the tournament to New Zealanders so everyone can share in the experience.

All 48 Rugby World Cup 2019 matches will be available on Spark Sport, with 12 of the matches available free-to-air on TVNZ 1. This is an expansion of the Spark Sport TVNZ partnership and means that every New Zealand match at the pool phase and knock out phase of Rugby World Cup 2019™, Japan will be broadcast on TVNZ 1. The 12 matches include 7 that will play live and 5 that will play with a 1-hour delay.

Common questions

1. What matches will I be able to watch on TVNZ?

12 matches will be broadcast free-to-air on TVNZ 1. We’re broadcasting delayed coverage of all New Zealand pool matches and the quarter-final, and live coverage of the semi-finals and the final. Full details of the TVNZ 1 Match Schedule here.

2. How can I watch with TVNZ?

TVNZ is the free-to-air partner of Spark Sport who are Official Broadcaster of Rugby World Cup 2019.

To watch Rugby World Cup 2019 matches on TVNZ 1 just turn on your telly as usual. Most viewers watch with us through traditional broadcast using a TV connected to an aerial or satellite dish – AKA free-to-air broadcast TV.

For viewers used to live streaming TVNZ 1 via TVNZ OnDemand or our TVNZ app, we’re really sorry but the matches won’t be available for viewing in that way.

TVNZ 1’s live stream will be turned off when we screen any matches – so if you watch TVNZ 1 online through TVNZ OnDemand or via the TVNZ app, you’ll need to head over to Spark Sport to stream these matches or switch to free-to-air broadcast TV.
