Raised in Ocean Grove on Victoria’s beautiful Bellarine Peninsula, Sam has always relished being in the open water, surfing the best waves and fishing with mates.

The middle of three children, Sam says he was a good student at school, excelling in outdoor activities and home economics.

As a child he would help his grandmother Joan prepare family dinners, often given the jobs of ensuring the custard had no lumps and potting broad beans. Sam loved trekking down to the extensive garden with his grandfather Ray, picking vegetables for that night’s meal. The close-knit family routinely gather for a Sunday roast and Sam says food has always been the motivator for big celebrations and occasions.

A self-proclaimed lover of “dude food”, Sam says he would love to get work experience in a kitchen after his MasterChef Australia journey, with the goal of one day opening his own surf-inspired, community-orientated café in Ocean Grove, serving local produce.

After travelling through Thailand, Bali and Vietnam and indulging in cooking tours and bold street food, Sam also enjoys testing himself, cooking a variety of Asian dishes at home. Sam cites local chef Ben Shewry as one of his great food idols, alongside Marty Chichester and Aaron Turner.

Inspired by chefs with a passion for food, Sam says he loves those who can trigger an emotion and feeling within him during a meal. When he is not working and cooking up a storm in the kitchen, Sam is a passionate AFL supporter, cheering on his Essendon Bombers.
