  • Protecting your home during a reno

If you’ve renovated a home before or if you’re in the throws of one now, our friends at AA Insurance have put together some helpful tips to make sure you look after yourself and your stuff during this busy and often stressful time...

Neighbourhood watch: With tradespeople coming and going from your property, your neighbours are less likely to know who should and shouldn’t be there. So it’s a good idea to let them know who you’re expecting and when, especially if you’re not living at the property during the reno.

Remove temptation: Keep tools, ladders, wheelie bins and anything that could be used to get access to your house out of sight or away from the home. For example, a large pile of excess wood near a window makes for a great platform to get into your home, while a wheelbarrow is tempting to transport items away from the site!

Out of sight, out of mind: Be careful when disposing of any tell-tale packaging for the fantastic new things you’ve purchased to go in your home. Place packaging inside your rubbish bin or bags, so anyone passing your home won’t know you have any new items worth stealing.

Safety first: Ensure you take appropriate safety precautions to protect yourself while you’re getting stuck into a bit of DIY, i.e. protective eyewear, gloves, footwear etc.

Finishing up: Once the renovations are complete, it’s a good time to let your insurer know and also make sure your cover is up-to-date. This may mean increasing your Sum Insured to better reflect the value you’ve added to your home. And don’t forget to update your contents insurance too, especially if you’ve added new furniture and accessories.
