  • How to: create your own artwork

Walls looking a little barren but don’t want to invest in expensive artwork? Why not create your own?

The beautiful wall art above was hand painted by Joanna Jefferies for her three daughters. The base colour for the walls were painted with Resene Blanched Pink. Once dry, Jo started by applying hand-painted colour 'patches' on the wall. When the background was dry she painted flowers free-hand over the top. Colours used here: Resene Cream Can, Resene Galliano, Resene Half Smalt Blue, Resene Weathered Orange, Resene Moody Blue, Resene Resolution Blue, Resene Daredevil, Resene Butterfly, Resene Rice Cake, Resene Kermit, Resene Smitten, Resene Cornflower and Resene Citron.

Don't feel confident you can pull off a masterpiece like Jo? The good news is, you don’t need to be an artist to create striking artworks (we promise!), sometimes a series of canvases each painted a different colour, or colours with a bold geometric or splash pattern is all you need to jazz up a room. And if the room colours change in the future, you can simply repaint the canvases to suit.

If you have kids in the house, or teenagers desperate to express themselves, get them involved. Paint a base colour onto the canvas to suit the room scheme and then select some other colours for your child to work with. This way the colours won’t clash with the room colours and you’ll have a very special artwork keepsake.

Family photos and artwork can also be transferred onto wallpaper using Resene WallPrint. This can be an ideal way to create a striking feature wall using treasured family moments rather than hiding them away in albums and drawers.

For more clever ideas to use paint to add an arty flavour to your home check out the gallery below, or head to the Resene Art Projects page - there are projects suitable for adults and children, so you can select one that suits your skill level.
