  • Home and Away: The Bay and Beyond

So many paths to Hollywood start on the sandy shores of Summer Bay. Here’s a look at some of our favourite Aussie soap stars, who’ve hit the big time after leaving the show.

    Chris Hemsworth (2004-2007)

Hemsworth played Kim Hyde, high-school-dropout, local hero and resident Summer Bay man candy.

He’s now recognisable as Nordic god, Thor, in the Marvel superhero movie franchise.

Hemsworth has also starred in recent Hollywood adaptations of Ghostbusters and Star Trek.

He was voted Sexiest Man Alive, by People magazine in 2014.

Aside from his acting career, Hemsworth has a daughter and twin sons, with his wife Elsa Pataky.

    Heath Ledger (1997)

Ledger played troublemaker Scott Irwin, who took advantage of Summer Bay’s kind community.

As a young actor, Ledger starred in popular films such as 10 Things I Hate About You , A Knight’s Tale and Brokeback Mountain.

He was found dead in his apartment, at the age of 28, one of Hollywood’s biggest tragedies.

After his death, Ledger received an Academy Award for his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight.

    Isabel Lucas (2003-2006)

Lucas played Tasha Andrews. Tasha was raised in a remote fortress camp, until one day she escaped and showed up in Summer Bay.

She went on to star in movies such as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and Immortals.

Lucas appears in the 2017 TV series Emerald City, and can be seen in the music video for Ed Sheeran’s Give Me Love.

Lucas also works as a model, and is an activist and spokesperson for several charities.

    Isla Fisher  (1994-1997)

Fisher played Shannon Reed, one of Summer Bay’s many foster children, and the show’s first bisexual character.

She went on to star in feature films including Wedding Crashers, Definitely Maybe, and The Great Gatsby alongside Leonardo DiCaprio.

Fisher is happily married to fellow Hollywood actor Sacha Baron Cohen. They have two daughters and a son together.

    Luke Mitchell (2009-2013)

Mitchell played Romeo Smith, the charming flirt who died tragically from melanoma.

He also starred in Australia’s other soap opera, Neighbours, and the children’s fantasy series H20: Just Add Water.

In 2013, he married Home and Away co-star Rebecca Breeds.

Mitchell is now a series regular in popular American dramas Blindspot and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

    Mark Furze (2004/2008)

Furze played Ric (Eric) Dalby, the violent teenager who transformed into a “good guy” in his time on the show.

Furze also starred in Water Rats, and had a recurring role in Underbelly.

He also formed the band Falcon Road, before joining New Zealand band Shotgun Alley.

    Rebecca Cartwright (1998-2005)

Cartwright played Summer Bay’s golden girl, Hayley Smith. Hayley was one of the most-loved characters of the series, but trouble seemed to follow her everywhere.

Cartwright left the show to pursue a career in music, but only ever released one album.

In 2004, she won the first season of Australia’s Dancing with the Stars.

Cartwright was engaged to her Home and Away co-star Beau Brady (Noah), but things didn’t work out between them.

Now she’s married to tennis player Lleyton Hewitt, and they have a daughter together.

    Ryan Kwanten (1997-2002)

Kwanten played Vinnie Patterson, one of Summer Bay’s most lovable jokers.

After leaving Home and Away, Kwanten was cast in the hugely popular HBO series, True Blood. He starred as Jason Stackhouse, alongside Kiwi actress Anna Paquin.

    Simon Baker (1993-1994)

Baker's time in Summer Bay was fleeting. He only starred in 19 episodes, but left a lasting impression on the characters. He played James Hudson, a photography teacher at Summer Bay High.

Baker is most recognisable for his portrayal of Patrick Jane, in TV drama The Mentalist. He won an Emmy Award for his work in this role.

He also starred in legal drama The Guardian.

Baker has appeared in several Hollywood films too, most notably The Devil Wears Prada, alongside Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep.

    Steve Peacocke (2011-2016)

Peacocke played the original River Boy, Darryl “Brax” Braxton. Gang member turned family man,  Brax remains one of the show’s most popular characters, even after his departure.

Shortly after leaving Home and Away, Peacocke was cast in a supporting role, in the Hollywood blockbuster Me Before You.

He also starred in Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.

Peacocke recently married long-term girlfriend and Home and Away co-star, Bridgette Sneddon.

    Tammin Sursok (2000-2004)

Sursok played Dani, the rebel teenage daughter of Rhys and Shelley Sutherland.

After Home and Away, she had a regular role in American soap opera, The Young and the Restless.
