In the early 90s, Schwimmer had supporting roles in TV crime dramas such as L.A Law and NYPD Blue.

Schwimmer was the first actor to be cast in Friends, he turned it down originally but then changed his mind.

He went on to win an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, for his role as Ross.

His first movie appearance was alongside Gwyneth Paltrow, in The Pallbearer.


In the early 2000s, Schwimmer took to the stage, appearing in London’s Gielgud Theatre and on Broadway.

He had a go at directing too, his first behind-the-camera movie was Run Fatboy Run, starring Simon Pegg. He also directed two episodes of Matt LeBlanc's spinoff show, Joey.

Schwimmer has had guest appearances in TV productions 30 Rock, Entourage and The People v. O.J. Simpson.

Perhaps his most popular film credit to date is the voice of Melman the giraffe, in the animated Madagascar movies.

Schwimmer married British artist Zoe Buckman in 2010, and their daughter Cleo was born in 2011. Recently the couple announced that they were taking some time apart.
