The 2018 Commonwealth Games will be Southgate’s first major international competition.

He was born in Auckland and started his competitive pole vault career at the 2011 World Youth Championships, where he finished fourth.

In 2016, Southgate set his personal best of 5.47m, which is just 4cm shy of the New Zealand record, when he finished second at the Australian Championships.

He has won the last five New Zealand Championship pole vault titles and is a senior member of the North Harbour Athletics Club.

In 2017, he was awarded the Yvette Williams Scholarship, named for New Zealand’s first female Olympic gold medallist. This will help him with funds for equipment, training and preparation for Olympic competitions.

After competing at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, Southgate has his sights set on the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
