If one drama had everyone talking in the UK this year it was Apple Tree Yard, which has been described as shocking and powerful.

The show's spectacular two leads in particular received praise for their performances, and if you can't quite place their faces, here's a little background.

Emily Watson as Dr. Yvonne Carmichael

The British thespian Emily Watson has enjoyed a fruitful stage, film and television career that's spanned over two decades, and now she's back on our screens in the small screen adaptation of Apple Tree Yard.

After making her feature film debut in Lars von Trier's Breaking the Waves, for which she earned an Academy Award nomination, Watson has gone on to star in films like Angela's Ashes, Gosford Park, and Punch-Drunk Love opposite Adam Sandler.

Most notably, Watson stunned audiences with her portrayal of Janet Leach in the two-part film Appropriate Adult, and was awarded a BAFTA for her performance. Thanks to her years of service to the dramatic arts, she was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2015.

Ben Chaplin as Mark Costley

English actor Ben Chaplin began his film career in the early 90s, appearing in Bye Bye Baby and Feast of July. However, after earning stellar reviews and an Oliver Award nomination for his performance in Sam Mendes’ production of The Glass Menagerie, Chaplin’s career really took off.

He has gone on to work with some of Hollywood’s most prestigious talents including Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line), Nicole Kidman (Birthday Girl), Sally Field (Two Weeks), and Richard Linklater (Me and Orsen Wells).

Recently, the esteemed actor played Ella’s father in Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella , and starred in The Legend of Tarzan opposite Alexander Skarsgard.
