The world's steepest funicular rail line opens on Swiss mountainside

December 18, 2017

After five-years of construction, the world's steepest funicular rail line has opened in Switzerland.

CNN reports the rotating passenger cabins keep the occupants upright as the funicular rises up the snowy mountain.

It travels up 743 metres, about 100m horizontally with gradients rising to 110 per cent in some parts, in the Swiss alpine resort of Stoos.

Spokesperson Ivan Steiner told CNN, "After 14 years of planning and building, everyone is very proud of this train".

It breaks the steepest rail record another funicular in Switzerland that had a gradient of 106 per cent.

It cost $75 million to build.
