Watch: Spectacular footage of massive waves surging down Chinese river during flood tide

October 8, 2017

Massive waves more than 10-metres-high have been witnessed surging down an inland river in China during a tidal bore.

Around 30,000 spectators watched the spectacular Quiantang River tidal bore in east China's Zhejiang Province yesterday, according to Chinese broadcaster CCTV.

The waves are caused by the moon's gravitational pull and have been drawing tourists to witness the event for hundreds of years.

A number of T-shaped dams have been constructed on the river to soften the force of the potentially destructive wall of water, saving nearby villages and farms from being flooded.

Even after the tidal bore smashed into one of these nine-metre high dams, it managed to travel another three kilometres before dispelling.
