Watch: Soggy koala plucked to safety by coastguard after being found clinging to mooring ropes 300m offshore

October 9, 2017

A koala that found itself a little far from home was plucked to safety by the coastguard in Victoria.

The Australian crew spotted the animal clinging to ropes on moorings 300 metres from shore.

It was happy to board the boat and return to more familiar surroundings.

Commander of the Westernport coast guard Jeremy West told the Herald Sun that it wasn't their usual rescue.

"It was pretty surprising, it’s not every day you come across a koala in the water!" he said.

"The crew noticed the koala hanging onto a rope, so they saved him by getting him back on board.

"They covered it in a blanket before releasing into nearby bushland."
