Watch: Sexuality expert says parents should ask for baby's consent before changing their nappy

May 11, 2018

A sexuality expert has appeared in an interview on Australia's ABC News saying that parents should ask babies for their permission before changing their nappies in order to set up a culture of consent from birth.

Deanne Carson, who has a Twitter account that labels her as a "sexuality educator, speaker and author," was speaking with ABC this week about creating a culture of consent in society when she gave the parenting advice.

The expert said she usually works with children aged three and up to inform them on issues surrounding consent.

However, when asked how young they should be introduced to the idea of consent Ms Carson went a step further saying it should be from birth.

"Just about how to set up a culture of consent in their homes so 'I'm going to change your nappy now, is that OK,'" Ms Carson said.

"Of course a baby is not going to respond 'yes mum that's awesome, I'd love to have my nappy changed'.

"But if you leave a space, and wait for body language and wait to make eye contact then you're letting that child know that their response matters."

Not everyone was convinced by the advice with some taking to Twitter to voice their displeasure.

Comments ranged from "I'm not hearing this right surely" to simply "I'm dumbfounded."
