White House press secretary Sean Spicer has fumbled his way through a press conference discussing President Donald Trump's claim that Barack Obama wire tapped him during the election.

Last week President Trump accused Barack Obama of tapping his phones during the election campaign.

Today marks the deadline for the US justice department to provide evidence that supports Mr Trump's wire tap claims.

Mr Spicer says Mr Trump wasn't actually referring to wire tapping when he tweeted about wire tapping.

"The president was very clear in his tweet that it was ‘wire tapping’ that spans a host of surveillance type options," Spicer fumbled.

"There have been numerous reports from a variety of outlets over the last couple of months that seem to indicate that there has been different types of surveillance that has occurred in the 2016 election."

Mr Trump, whose administration has been under siege over campaign contacts with Russian officials, said in a series of tweets that he "just found out that Obama had my 'wires tapped' in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!'

Mr Trump said the wiretapping occurred in October. Mr Trump ran the presidential transition largely out of Trump Tower in New York, where he also maintains a residence.

Mr Obama, along with the FBI and former National Intelligence director have denied the allegations.
