Watch: Quick thinking man describes disarming Tennessee waffle house gunman after four people shot dead - 'You have to do this now'

April 23, 2018

A man is being hailed as a hero after he fought with and disarmed a shooter who walked into a waffle restaurant in the US state of Tennessee and killed four people, injuring four others.

Jame Shaw Jr, 29, who was inside the Antioch Waffle house on Sunday (overnight NZT), said he waited for his opportunity and took it when suspect Travis Reinking's rifle appeared to jam.

Mr Shaw was inside the restaurant in the town of Antioch when he thought he heard some plates shatter - but it turned out to be a shooting.

He ran for the bathroom area and suffered a graze wound from one of the gunman's bullets.

"His either got jammed or he was trying to reload, not exactly sure, but I saw my opportunity - my window - so I took it," Mr Shaw told The Tennessean.

"I ran through the door as fast as I can and just kind of jammed him up with the gun with it pointed down, then we just sort of started wrestling for it and scuffling and fighting for it.

"He let it go with one hand and when he just had it in his other hand I took it and I tossed it over the counter and I pretty much removed him from the restaurant.

"I really wasn't a process of thinking - it was more so of a 'now' - you have to do this now ... or it's not going to be ... if I let him load that weapon it wasn't going to be another chance - it was pretty much like shooting fish in a barrel because it was ... like a brick wall behind us and nowhere to go."

Reinking is still at large and police believe he is armed.
