Watch: Liquefaction on Sapporo streets after 6.7 magnitude Japan quake

September 6, 2018

Liquefaction has been filmed on the streets of Sapporo following today's magnitude-6.7 earthquake on the island of Hokkaido.

A video taken in the Kiyota Ward of the city shows the muddy mixture covering a large portion of a street.

Liquefaction takes place during intense vibrations, turning solids into liquids.

It was widely observed following the 2011 Canterbury Earthquake.

Other imagery from Kiyota Ward shows severely damaged houses and streets with sewerage exposed.
