Watch: He said yes! Tears and cheers as man proposes to boyfriend after Aussie same-sex marriage vote

November 15, 2017

A man has made the most of Australia's historic same-sex marriage yes vote by proposing to his boyfriend almost immediately after the result was announced.

James Brechney was among crowds celebrating the result at Sydney's Prince Alfred Park when he turned to his partner Stuart Henshell with a surprise proposal.

"We live together and Stuart, I love you with all my heart and I want to tell you something in front of the cameras," Mr Brechney said while giving an interview to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

"Will you marry me?"

The pink suit-wearing Mr Brechney then put a ring on his gob smacked partner's finger, as loud cheers erupted in the background.

The happy scenes which played out in the park will surely be the first of many around the country now the results of the vote are in.
