Watch: Out-of-control Melbourne driver ploughs along footpath, upending cafe diners

October 17, 2017

A handful of Melbourne al fresco diners enjoying a lunchtime kebab were hurled into the air yesterday by an errant 74-year-old driver who mounted the footpath at incredible speed.

Six people were taken to hopsital, miraculously none seriously injured, when the elderly driver's Honda sedan ploughed along the lunchtime shopping strip for 50 metres before crashing into the eatery, Cafe Gardenia, in east Melbourne.

One of those struck was 13-year-old CaseJelena Ivanovicy Hanemann who was only thrown out of the way of the hurtling car by her mother.

"I saved her life but I also saved mine," Ms Ivanovic told 9 NEWS.

The Ivanovic mother and daughter's near death experience occurred just before 12:30 Melbourne time yesterday.

CCTV footage of the wild driving was captured by a local Kebab shop.

"I'm still in shock, seriously, I feel like crying," Ms Eroglu, who works at the shop said after witnessing the drive-by up-close.

"I took one step back, I saw it coming. (It was) just shocking."

After crashing into Cafe Gardenia many bystanders rushed to the elderly drivers aid.

Emergency services were also quickly on the scene within minutes.

The fire brigade worked for hours to ensure the cafe the Honda crashed right into the front of was stable, amid fears it could collapse.
