Nine News reports that warships and military planes have been dispatched after the storm made landfall on yestrerday leaving thousands homeless and at least 13 dead in the Caribbean.
They quote the Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as saying: "There is no power, no gasoline, no running water. Houses are under water, cars are floating through the streets, inhabitants are sitting in the dark in ruined houses and are cut off from the outside world."
Irma is thought to be heading towards Florida where towns are being evacuated and people are preparing for the worst.
