A road bridge in the Italian city of Genoa has collapsed, killing at least 35 people.

The structure on a main highway linking Italy with France gave way overnight during a sudden, violent storm, sending vehicles plunging 45 metres into a heap of rubble below.

Fire brigade sources said at least 35 people were killed following the incident, the BBC reports.
