Video: Sky over London turns red in unusual phenomenon

October 17, 2017

Hurricane Ophelia and fires in Europe are said to have turned the sky a reddish colour.

A hurricane and fires in Europe have caused the sky to turn red over parts of England and Wales.

The red sky is said to be caused by Hurricane Ophelia dragging tropical air and dust from the Sahara Desert into Britain.

Weather experts say debris from the fires in Spain and Portugal were also contributing to the phenomenon.

BBC weather presenter Simon King says the red sky has been caused by the particles in the air cause blue light to scatter, leaving longer-wavelength red light to shine through.
