Video: Helicopter footage shows widespread damage in Florida Keys following Hurricane Irma

An aerial view from a helicopter shows damage done to some homes in Key West, Florida, after Hurricane Irma made landfall about 32km outside the island city.

The huge winds caused massive damage to homes and businesses on the southern tip of Florida.

Most homes remained intact, but some were badly damaged due to high winds.

The storm engulfed nearly all of Florida, from the state's southernmost point up to the Georgia line, from the Atlantic coast to the Gulf side.

More than 6.5 million homes and businesses statewide lost power, and 220,000 people huddled in shelters.

Officials warned it could take weeks for electricity to be restored to everyone.
