US cheerleading coach who forced students into splits as they screamed in pain escapes charges

October 17, 2017

A US cheerleading coach who was caught forcing students into the splits as they cried out in pain will not be facing criminal charges over the incident.

The coach facing charges was Denver East High School's former coach Ozell Williams, who was forced to resign after videos surfaced showing him taking part in the seemingly barbaric acts.

The recordings were broadcast on local TV station KUSA-TV in August, showing eight cheerleaders repeatedly being pushed into splits.

In one video, a girl appears to cry out in pain and repeatedly asks her coach to "please stop."

District Attorney Beth McCann said in a statement released on Sunday that there was "insufficient evidence to warrant charges" against Mr Williams.

Mr McCann said although the videos showing the cheerleaders crying out in pain "is painful to watch," the coach's actions don’t constitute "a prosecutable crime," as the case cannot be proved beyond reasonable doubt.

Another two school officials resigned after the videos were released, East High School principal Andy Mendelsberg and athletic director Lisa Porter.
