'What a real hero looks like' - Northern Ireland schoolboy stops gang from abducting 18-year-old girl

April 11, 2019

A Northern Ireland schoolboy has been dubbed a hero by police after he stopped a gang from abducting an 18-year-old girl.

Tiernan McCready noticed three men grab the girl and attempt to get her into a van in Bogside Derry, according to the Belfast Telegraph.

The boy shouted at the men, scaring them away, and then led the girl to safety.

He returned home and told his mother what happened, who then rang police.

Northern Ireland police have praised the youngster for his heroic act.

The police officers awarded Tiernan with the PSNI Badge of Honour and a box of Maltesers and took to their Facebook page saying, “this is what a real hero looks like”.

In the Facebook post they wrote:

"Most adults would be paralysed in shock, confusion or fear and fail to act till it was too late. Tiernan reacted instantly," the post read.

"Let that sink in. This could have been the start of a potentially serious and harrowing crime. That girl could have been my child, my sister, your child, your family member."

"This doesn’t go anywhere near to paying off the debt our community owes this boy. Our youngsters often get a bad rep but remember the vast majority are brave and big hearted just like Tiernan."

Police are currently investigating the incident and are on the hunt to find the white van involved.
