'It was raining money' – US highway brought to halt after faulty armoured truck spews out flying dollar bills

December 15, 2018

New Jersey morning commuters were sent into a frenzy after a faulty armoured truck spilled money all across a highway.

Police say more than half a million dollars spilled from an armoured truck onto a New Jersey highway, and nearly $300,000 remains missing a day later.

The Brinks truck, which experienced a mechanical issue with the rear door, causing bags to fall out, is seen pulled aside with a trail of dollar bills behind it and along with that, people scrambling out of their cars to get their hands on a share of the money.

People in a bus look on, laugh and exclaim at the lolly-scramble behaviour.

The frenzy caused at least two car crashes but the occupants aren't seen in the car.

"Are the people out of the car picking up money?" speculates one bus passenger.

The video, which was posted on Twitter, has attracted a lot of media attention, along with voices of morality.

"I would LOVE if this video ended with a shot of the motorists handing the money back to the Brinks driver. This is not money from Heaven. It is not an early Christmas. It is not your lucky day. The money belongs to someone and this is stealing! Shame on them!"

"This happened a while back and everyone who took money was identified on video then arrested so the Lord is watching and so are authorities," another person commented.

Police say Brink's workers and other motorists recovered about $205,000 from the roadway. Five people turned in about another $11,000.

About $294,000 is still missing.

"Man, Brinks needs to watch out. People are going to be rear ending their trucks like mad now..." one person commented on the post.

The video has received over 90 thousand views in just over a day.
