Australian airline Qantas has been slammed after sending out an email asking employees to 'lend a hand' and volunteer over the Christmas period at a Sydney airport.
In an email which has since gone viral, the airline said they were "trialling a new volunteer program for our Campus [Mascot]-based people who want to lend a hand to the front line", the Daily Mail reports.
"We require volunteers to assist the self-service check in and auto bag drop area, bussing gates, concourse arrivals hall and at the transfer desk."
The tasks also include handing out water bottles and chocolates to passengers, a spokeperson for the airline told The Australian.
The spokesperson added that the "volunteer initiative" was not about cutting costs but to "spread a bit of Christmas cheer during a really busy period".
The airline has been slammed on social media over the volunteer initiative.
"They can afford to pay people for this work. Not a good look, Qantas," one man said.
The Australian Services Union New South Wales branch secretary Natalie Lang told The Australian "the jobs they want volunteers to do is skilled work".
