'Prolific and wealthy cyber criminal' jailed for blackmail scam targeting porn website visitors

April 10, 2019

UK university drop-out Zain Qaiser has been jailed for making thousands of dollars blackmailing users of online porn.

He has been imprisoned for more than six years for using his computer skills to trick people into paying "fines", with the threat that they'd be investigated and exposed if they didn't.

The BBC described Qaiser as "one of the UK's most prolific and wealthy cyber criminals".

He posted fake adverts on popular porn websites, causing thousands of users' computers to lock up when they clicked on them. A pop-up with fake prosecution warnings from police, FBI and other agencies would then appear on the screen.

Users could pay a small fine to get their computer back up and running, and thousands did so out of fear of being exposed, the BBC reports.
