A pregnant woman's death is under investigation in India after a doctor was found to be intoxicated during an attempt to deliver her baby, who also died.

Police told the BBC they were called shortly after the Caesarian section surgery and confirmed that alcohol was found in the doctor’s system. It is unclear if his inebriated state was deliberate or due other (possibly medical) reasons.

The mother, Kamini Chachi, and baby were confirmed dead shortly after the operation.

The doctor, PJ Lakhani is in a top position at The Sonavala Hospital and has been working there for the last 15 years.

He said that he had called police because he feared he may be attacked by the family of the woman after they were told that she had died and that he had been drunk.

Local media had been told that the waiting family were informed the woman was suffering severe bleeding and that the baby had died.

The family then tried to intervene and take the woman to a private hospital but she did not survive.

She had arrived at the hospital on Monday (local time).
