Unplanned demonstrations, in which angry youths burnt tyres, were reported at several crossroads today (NZT) after Trump made the announcement.

The Palestinians claim east Jerusalem as their capital.

It was captured by Israel in 1967.

Trump has recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital, while paying little recognition to the Palestinian claim to the eastern part of the city.

The move is likely to inflame passions in the volatile region.
