The antinarcotics police unit in the south-western port of Buenaventura said the drugs were being shipped to Europe via central America and that the cache belonged to the Gulf Gang which is constituted mainly of Colombian drug traffickers.

A 2017 United Nations report released in July shows that coca production in Colombia has surged to levels not seen in two decades, confirming US government findings from March that production is skyrocketing.

The amount of land where coca was cultivated last year jumped 52 per cent to 360,774 acres.
