On Tuesday an image of the ring was shared on Facebook in the hopes of finding the owner.

Elizabeth Docherty came forward saying she was devastated when she lost her wedding ring in sand dunes while on holiday a few months ago.

"My sister-in-law actually gave me a call and told me to jump on Facebook and have a look at what my mother-in-law had tagged us in.

"She dealt with me for three solid minutes just crying my eyes out when I saw the picture of my ring," Ms Docherty said.

The ring was found just outside Birdsville by a traveller in June.

She won't be able to claim the ring until the nearby Queensland town of Birdsville's only police officer verifies it's hers.
